Freelance copywriter for UK websites
Words that sell, and rank
So, you have a UK website, and you need a freelance copywriter. Maybe you’ve tried writing for yourself, maybe you’ve paid someone else to write your content and it didn’t work out. Whatever the reason you’ve landed here, I’d love to help you with your website copy.
Writing for yourself is hard. Nothing makes the washing-up look like a higher priority than staring at a blank screen where you’ve written “My Website” and nothing else for the last two hours. I know, I’ve been there.
Why your website copy isn’t bringing you customers
You’ve got a website. People even visit it. Then they leave without buying, booking or filling in the form, and nobody can tell you why.
Nine times out of ten it’s the words. Either they were written for you (all “we” and no “you”), written for Google (keywords jammed in until nobody can read it), or written at midnight after three coffees by someone who’d rather be doing anything else. As a small business owner and a freelancer, I know how to make your website words work. That means your potential clients don’t just read them, they act on them by buying from you or booking a call.
It’s all about you
Founded in 1998, passionate about, we pride ourselves. Nobody searched for that.
Nobody can tell what you do
“Solutions” and “services” on the homepage, and the reader still guessing three scrolls later.
Keyword stuffed to death
Plumber Kettering plumbers Kettering plumbing Kettering. Google isn’t impressed and neither is the plumber.
No reason to act
The page ends. There’s no button, no next step, no “here’s what happens now”.
Written for the wrong search
Ranking for a question nobody with a budget is asking.
The AI did it
Fluent, tidy, and exactly the same as every competitor’s page. You can hear the thesaurus.
Here’s how I can help
Copy is the bit you came for. The other two are here because they’re the same job done from a different end, and most people need at least a bit of both.
Freelance SEO
Want to know the most expensive website in the world? The one nobody can bloody find.
While other SEO “experts” are busy choosing between technical expertise or content optimisation (because apparently you can’t do both), I’m over here doing it all, and doing it without making you want to headbutt your keyboard.
Technical SEO? Check. On-page optimisation? Check. Explaining what I’m doing in plain English? Double check.
No buzzwords. No jargon. No nonsense. Just SEO that brings you business, not pretty analytics graphs to show your mum.
SEO servicesFreelance copywriting
You’ve got two options for your website copy.
Spend hours staring at a blank screen trying to make your business sound amazing (while secretly wondering if anyone reads this stuff), then sprinkle in some keywords and pray to the Google gods.
Or let me write it for you. Words that sell, written to match what your customers are searching for, no prayer circles required.
I’ve been writing SEO-friendly copy since Google was a glint in a programmer’s eye. Your website deserves better than keyword-stuffed waffle written at midnight after three coffees.
SEO copywritingSEO training
Maybe you want to do it all yourself (respect, I love a DIY warrior). Maybe you just want to know enough to call BS when someone tries to sell you “guaranteed page 1 rankings”. Or maybe you’re somewhere in between.
After 30 years of doing this I’ve seen every SEO situation under the sun, and I’ve packaged all that up into different options. Quick guidance when you’re stuck. Deep-dive 1:1 sessions. Self-paced learning without the waffle.
Whichever route you pick, you get three decades of SEO experience without the usual industry nonsense.
SEO trainingWhat a freelance copywriter can write for you
If it lives on a website and needs to be read by a human and a search engine, I’ve written one.
Homepage copy
What you do, who for, and why you, in the first screen. Not three scrolls down.
Service pages
One page per thing you sell, written for the person who’s ready to buy it.
About pages
Your story, told so it’s about the reader. Yes, that’s possible.
Landing pages
One offer, one reader, one button. Built to match the ad or the search that brought them.
Blog posts and articles
Content that answers what your customers are searching for, in your voice, not a robot’s.
Case studies
Problem, what you did, what happened. Proof that reads like a story, not a spreadsheet.
Product descriptions
From Jurassic World toys to timber windows. If it’s for sale, it needs a reason to buy.
Titles and descriptions
The bit Google shows in the results. Written to get the click, not just to tick a box.
Rewrites and tidy-ups
Already got copy that nearly works? I’ll fix it rather than start again. Cheaper, too.
Copywriting and SEO are the same job, done by two people who don’t talk
Most agencies have a copywriter who writes nice words and an SEO who bolts keywords onto them afterwards. Then they wonder why the page reads like a ransom note. I do both, at the same desk, in the same head, and have done since before Google existed.
- Copy written to match what your customers type into Google, not what you’d like them to type
- Titles, headings and descriptions done as part of the job, not as an add-on
- No keyword stuffing, no “Plumber Kettering” seventeen times
- Pages written to answer the question behind the search, so they rank and convert
- Every draft explained in plain English, and you get the final say on the words
- Somebody who’ll tell you when a page doesn’t need writing at all
Bring me a real website, not a wish list
The best copywriting jobs start with what you’ve already got, even if what you’ve got is a mess. Especially if it’s a mess.
Before we talk, have a think about
- Which pages are costing you sleep
- Who your best customers are, and what they said when they first got in touch
- What you’d like people to do on the page (call, book, buy, download)
- Anything you’ve had written before, and why it didn’t work
What I do with it
- Look at what people are searching for before they find you
- Read your existing pages and tell you what’s worth keeping
- Write the copy, headings, titles and descriptions in one go
- Send it in a format your web person can just paste in
Who hires a freelance copywriter like me
If you run a UK business, sell to other businesses or to people who search before they buy, and you’ve stared at a blank page for long enough, this is for you. If you want 5,000 words of AI filler by Friday, it isn’t. There are cheaper places for that.
Why hire this freelance copywriter
Been there, SEO’d that
I was writing and optimising websites when a Google was just a really big number. That’s over 30 years of watching search engines come and go, algorithms dance, and “experts” claim they know the secret sauce. Spoiler: there isn’t one. Just solid, tested experience that works.
Words that work, not just look pretty
Remember when content was just words on a page? Me too. These days it’s about writing copy that makes both humans and search engines happy. I’ve been finding that sweet spot since my wannabe journalism days, turning complex topics into content that gets read (and ranked).
Jack of all trades, master of research
From SaaS to saucepans, children’s clothes to construction sites, I’ve written about them all. Engineering? Check. Healthcare? Done it. Accounting? Don’t get me started. I become a temporary expert in whatever I write about, which also makes me dangerous at pub quizzes.
What people say about working with Nikki
Clients, course students and people I’ve written for. Same person, same approach.
Free download: score your own website copy
Not ready to hire anyone? Fair enough. The copy review worksheet walks you round your homepage, about page, contact page and service pages and tells you what to fix in 30 minutes a go. If you score under 80, you know where I am.
Send me the worksheetWhat freelance copywriting costs
No day rates, no per-word nonsense, no surprise invoice. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs, and that’s the number. Web pages start from £300 plus VAT. The first 30 minute call is free, and you’ll leave it with something useful whether you hire me or not.

Do you write for any industry?
Pretty much. Thirty years of SaaS, saucepans, engineering, healthcare, accounting, construction and children’s clothes. If you sell something a human can explain, I can write about it. The research is the bit I enjoy.
Will the copy be written for Google or for people?
Both, because it’s the same thing done properly. I look at what your customers are searching for first, then write for the person doing the searching. Google’s rather good at spotting the difference these days.
Do you use AI to write it?
I write it. I might use tools for research the way I’d use a search engine, but the words are mine, in your voice, and you’ll be able to tell. If you want AI copy, it’s cheaper to do it yourself.
How many rounds of changes do I get?
Enough to get it right, within reason. Usually one round does it because we talk properly before I write a word. If you change your mind about what the business does halfway through, that’s a new job.
Can you put it on the site for me?
Often, yes, especially on WordPress. Otherwise I send it in a format your web person can paste straight in, with the headings, titles and descriptions marked up so nothing gets lost.
I’ve already got copy. Can you just fix it?
Yes, and I’d rather. A rewrite of something that nearly works is quicker and cheaper than starting from a blank page, and you keep the bits that sound like you.
Are you based in the UK?
Yes. UK English, UK spelling, UK business hours, and I know the difference between a solicitor and a lawyer. I work with clients across the UK and the odd one abroad who wants to sound British.
Want to see if I could be the freelance copywriter for you?
Thirty minutes, free, no hard sell. Bring the page that’s bugging you and we’ll pull it apart together.
