SEO for copywriters and copywriting websites
You’re brilliant with words. Now let’s get people to your website to read them.
You’re a copywriter, which means you’re great with words. Whether you write for websites or other online platforms, blogs, or social media. And if people could just see your website, they’d be impressed with your fabulous writing, your extensive portfolio, and the case studies of all the brilliant projects you’ve worked on.
The problem is, people AREN’T seeing your website, because your skillset is writing, not SEO. I get it. I built a whole free email course about it. And I’ve helped copywriters just like you with their SEO, through my SEO services, 1:1 training, and the non-wanky SEO course.
Why copywriters’ own websites don’t get found
You write websites that rank for other people. Your own site gets the leftover hours, the leftover energy and, usually, no SEO at all. That’s not a character flaw. It’s what happens when the client work pays the bills and your own site doesn’t nag.
Beautiful copy, no visitors
The words on your homepage are the best on the internet. Nobody knows, because nobody searching for a copywriter lands on it.
Ranking for your own name only
People who already know you can find you. People who need a copywriter and have never heard of you can’t. That’s the bigger group.
A portfolio Google can’t read
Case studies as PDFs, work samples as images, a “my work” page with six logos and no words. Great for humans, invisible to search engines.
Clients asking about SEO and you changing the subject
“Can you make it rank too?” is the question that turns a £500 job into a £1,500 one. Right now you’re saying “sort of”.
Advice from people who don’t get copy
Every SEO article tells you to stuff phrases in, hit a word count and write for robots. You know that’s bad writing. You don’t know what to do instead.
Referrals only
Your work comes from people who know people. Lovely, until the quiet month when nobody happens to mention you.
SEO services, copy and training for copywriters
Three ways in, depending on whether you’d like it done for you, written for you, or taught to you so you can sell it to your own clients.
SEO services
Your brilliant writing shouldn’t gather digital dust.
I’ll get your website in front of the right eyeballs, with SEO strategies that make Google fall in love with your website. And Google won’t be alone. When you rank for the searches people make when they’re looking for a copywriter, the visitors who arrive are the ones who want to hire one.
SEO servicesSEO content and copy
Writing about yourself is like trying to take a selfie with your eyes closed. Awkward, and you never quite get it right. You know it. I know it. Every copywriter who has stared at their own about page at 11pm knows it.
Here’s where I come in. I’ll write SEO-driven, sales-focused copy that makes your services sound as good as they are, ranks for the searches your clients are making, and gets people picking up the phone.
SEO copywritingSEO training
Want to add “SEO copywriter” to your services and double your rates? Or maybe you’re tired of clients throwing SEO terms around like confetti at a drunk wedding and want to understand what matters. I’ve got your back.
Add lucrative SEO copywriting to what you offer. Confidently explain to clients why their “stuff it with phrases” ideas are rubbish. Get your head around SEO without the tech talk.
SEO trainingWhat SEO for a copywriting website involves
Whether I’m doing it for you or teaching you to do it, this is the work. None of it involves writing worse.
What clients search for when they need you
“Copywriter for SaaS”, “B2B website copywriter”, “someone to write my about page”. The searches people make when they’re ready to hire, matched to pages that answer them.
Service pages that rank and sell
One page per thing you write, structured so Google understands it and a client can see themselves in it.
A portfolio search engines can read
Case studies as proper pages, with the client’s problem, what you wrote and what happened next. Words, not screenshots.
Your about page, done properly
The page most copywriters dread, turned into the page that convinces people you’re the one.
Technical checks
Speed, mobile, indexing, the plumbing that stops a good site ranking. Fixed, or explained clearly enough to hand to whoever built your site.
Niche and location pages
If you write for accountants, or you’re the go-to copywriter in Shrewsbury, pages that say so and rank for it.
Blog content that brings clients
Posts that answer the questions your future clients are asking, rather than another “five tips for better headlines”.
AI search and Google’s AI answers
Making sure your site is the one that gets mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI who to hire.
Selling SEO to your own clients
How to scope it, price it and explain it, so “can you make it rank too?” becomes a yes with a number attached.
SEO is the skill that turns a copywriter into an SEO copywriter
Two copywriters, same talent. One writes lovely words. The other writes lovely words that rank, and charges accordingly. The difference between them is a few weeks of learning what search engines want, and it’s a lot less technical than you’ve been led to believe.
- Your own website found by people looking for a copywriter, rather than only by people who already know you
- “SEO copywriting” on your services page, with rates to match
- A straight answer when a client asks why their page isn’t ranking
- Case studies and a portfolio that work as SEO assets rather than decoration
- Enquiries from strangers, so the quiet months stop being quiet
- No jargon, no tech talk, no writing for robots
Done for you or learn it yourself?
Both routes end up in the same place, a copywriting website that brings in clients. Which one suits you depends on how much time you’ve got and whether you want to sell SEO to your own clients afterwards.
Let me do it for you if
- You’re fully booked with client work and your own site is the thing that never gets done
- You want your website ranking and bringing in enquiries without learning a new discipline
- You’d rather write and let someone else worry about Google
- You want your about page and service pages written by someone who isn’t you. See SEO copywriting
Learn it yourself if
- You want to add SEO copywriting to your services and charge more for it
- You’d like to understand what your clients are on about when they say “search intent” and “schema”
- You prefer knowing how your own website works rather than trusting someone with it
- You want a course, a programme or 1:1 training rather than a retainer. Start with the free email course
Who I help with SEO for copywriters
Solo copywriters who’ve been living off referrals and want a second source of work. Small agencies whose own site is the last thing on the list. Writers who keep getting asked about SEO and would like to say yes with confidence. If you write for a living and your website isn’t pulling its weight, let’s chat.
Why trust me with your copywriting website’s SEO
Why trust me with your SEO?
I’ve been making websites findable since before Google was born. Thirty years of SEO experience means I’ve seen every trend, every algorithm update and every SEO “expert” who claims to have secret insider knowledge. Spoiler: they don’t. What works is understanding what people are searching for and giving it to them, and I’ve been doing that for a very long time.
Technical AND on-page SEO?
Yes, both. Three decades on both sides of the fence, from crawl budgets to content strategies, schema to search intent. Doing SEO halfway is like trying to herd cats with a feather. Technically possible, but why would you? Your copywriting website needs the plumbing and the words sorted, and I do both.
Your industry? I “get” copywriters
From solo copywriters to boutique agencies, I’ve helped writers get found by the people who want to hire them. I know which searches bring clients and which bring tyre-kickers, I know why your portfolio page isn’t ranking, and I know the panic of writing your own about page. If you’re a copywriter, let me help you too.
What copywriters and clients say about working with Nikki
Clients, course students and people whose sites I’ve fixed. Several of them write for a living.
Free SEO email course for copywriters
Not ready to hire anyone or buy anything? Fair enough. The free email course covers the SEO basics every copywriter should know, one tip at a time, written for people who care about words. Start there, and come back when you want the rest.
Get the free email courseWhat SEO for copywriters costs
The email course is free. The non-wanky SEO course and the Ascend programme for copywriters are for learning it yourself. A 1:1 strategy session is £200. Done-for-you SEO for your own website starts at £750 a month on the Foundation package, three months minimum. Tell me where you are and I’ll tell you which one makes sense, including “just do the free course for now”.
SEO for copywriters questions
Do copywriters really need SEO?
If you’re happy living off referrals, no. If you’d like clients who’ve never heard of you to find you, yes. Most copywriters I speak to have a website that ranks for their own name and nothing else, which means it only works for people who already know them.
Will SEO make my writing worse?
Not the way I do it. Stuffing phrases in and hitting word counts is how SEO was done in 2008, and it’s why copywriters are suspicious of it. Modern SEO is understanding what someone is trying to solve when they search, and writing the thing that solves it. You’re already good at that. You just need to point it at the right searches.
Can I learn enough SEO to sell it to my own clients?
Yes, and plenty of copywriters have. You don’t need to become a technical SEO. You need to understand search intent, page structure and what to say when a client asks why they’re not ranking. The Ascend programme and my 1:1 training are built for exactly that.
I’d rather you just did my website. Is that an option?
It is. I’ll audit your site, tell you what’s stopping it ranking, and either fix it or write the pages that are missing. Copywriters make good clients because you already know good words when you see them, and you’re quick to spot when I’ve got your tone wrong.
What about AI search? Does that change anything for copywriters?
It changes where some searches happen, not what wins. ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers pull from pages that clearly answer a question, which is the same thing that has always ranked. A copywriter who understands search intent is well placed for it. The free email course covers this.
Where do I start?
If you want to learn, start with the free email course. If you want it done, get in touch and I’ll have a look at your website first. No proposal deck, no hard sell.
Great copy deserves an audience.
You write the words. I’ll get people to your website to read them. Or teach you how, so you can charge your clients for it too.
