?”Don’t have colourful hair”
?”Don’t have tattoos and piercings”
?”Don’t swear on Social Media”
I’ve been doing what I do for 30 years, and in that time I’ve had and done all of the above.
❓ Have I lost gigs because of it? Probably.
❓ Have I gained clients ‘despite’ it? Definitely.
It amazes me that I still see the same posts in 2022 that I was seeing in 1992, 2002 and 2012 (just in different places!)
➡ “You have to present a corporate image…”
➡ “You need to tone down your personality…”
➡ “Cover up your tattoos…”
If it’s not people saying those things, it’s people saying they’ve been told those things.
? Currently I have pink hair – next week it will probably be red or purple. It doesn’t change the fact that I have 30 years of SEO and digital marketing knowledge.
? I have tattoos and piercings – I can still write a kick-ass intro to your website, an awesome course module or a great sales email.
? I swear quite a bit in real life and sometimes on social media – I can still produce amazing social media posts for your business that will generate enquiries.
I follow, admire and look up to a lot of people, and some of those swear on social media and are controversial.
I look out for, read and recommend people that don’t look ‘the corporate norm’, as well as those who do.
I’m shocked that things like this matter to some people in 2022.
Does having a ‘different’ image, outlook or thought process mean you’re not great at your profession?
Should it?
